Bring Back The Games

ReCap of the Issue:
In January 2009 the NYSPHSAA reduced the number of basketball games from 20 to 18. BCANY wrote a position paper and sent it to the NYSPHSAA for consideration at their May meeting. No action was taken at the meeting. Dave Archer, Executive Director met with Nina Van Erk, Executive Director of NYSPHSSA in May to discuss the issue. We then requested and received information from BCANY members as to the costs associated with a home game and an away game. The data provided a sample of what was actually saved by a school. A special BCANY Committee was formed in late June to plan the next steps to take to get the 2 games restored. The committee held a conference call in late June and then met in early July. The NYSPHSAA Central and Committee met again the first week of August. It is our understanding that they agreed to review the 2 game reduction at their next meeting in December.
Next Steps: A follow up BCANY Position Paper is being finalized for publication and distribution in early September. Also, our next actions as a committed professional association will be outlined and distributed to you soon.
It is important to show our unity as basketball coaches. To get the 2 games restored is a local school district, Sectional as well as state-wide issue. The BCANY action plan will address each of these segments.

The NYSPHSAA at the winter and spring 2010 meetings voted down restoring the games for the 2010-2011 season.

The reduction is for two years, with 2010-2011 being the second and last year.   BCANY members must be vigilant and ready so that this reduction is not extended beyond the 2010-2011 season.
