Under the guidance of Ogdensburg FA Coach (and BCANY Board member) Bill Merna, BCANY’S first Service Game was held in December. The game between Ogdensburg and Indian River was a test run of what a BCANY Service Game might entail. BCANY is going to hold Service Games based on the very successful Endowment Games in North Carolina and Foundation Games in Ohio.

The Ogdensburg FA school gave permission to collect donations and have a 50-50 at the game. On Wednesday the captains read what the teams was doing on the daily school announcements over the intercom. On Thursday and Friday the players manned a table outside the cafeteria that had informational posters on the Wounded Warrior Project. In 2 days they collected $153 from students and staff.
The game was Saturday – posters were by the door and a donation jar was displayed. Another $105 was taken in there. There was a good crowd at the game against Indian River. Their district is on the edge of Fort Drum and has many residents in the military. The 50-50 raffle took in $333 so we netted $166.50. The total was $424.50 – this has been sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Ogdensburg finished the Service game by volunteering at the local Am-Vets. They prepare, serve, and distribute to shut-ins a Christmas dinner. The local paper had some nice articles about the Service Game.

Near the conclusion of Coach Ron Hunter’s presentation at the 2009 BCANY

Fall Clinic, he asked “what coaches here in New York State will be with me and coach barefoot in a game near Martin Luther King Day in January?” In a terrific moment, nearly every New York coach in the hotel ballroom stood up!!!

Click here to go to Samaritan’s Feet — Website watch the video, learn that 300 million children wake up everyday with no shoes. The Samaritan’s Feet site – gives all the information and hints that a coach will need.

See how simple it is to donate $5. which provides a pair of shoes to a child who does not have any.

You can give by texting (SHOES) to 85944, and $5 will be added to your next phone bill.

The names of many of New York’s coaches who already signed up are listed on the Samaritan’s Feet site New York Coaches so far.

A tremendous number of BCANY coaches have signed up to coach barefoot. It certainly puts coaches outside of their comfort zone — but it is very important to do. Several other state basketball coaches associations wanted to get involved with Samaritans Feet. We are the first state basketball coaches association to jump into this activity. The eyes of other states are on us. We need to set a very high bar by raising the funds for a tremendous number of shoes.

Please coach barefoot. Then send an email to DArcher@stny.rr.com, to let us know that date, game and how it went. It is extremely important that we hear from every basketball coach in NYS who participates in Coaching barefoot for bare feet.

The Basketball Coaches Association of New York is a PROFESSIONAL and SERVICE organization. Basketball coaches in New York State have always been generous with their time and creativity in providing service to their communities. In order to facilitate the many various forms of service, we have organized the BCANY Service Movement.

Right now there are THREE major efforts within the BCANY Service Program.

The first is Coaches vs. Cancer. BCANY has been involved with this for several years and is now one of the top states in participation and results.

The second segment which is new this year is BCANY’s participation in Samaritan’s Feet. This started with Coach Ron Hunter’s presentation at the Fall Clinic in Albany.Complete details on how you and your team can participate will be coming in later November.

The third segment is also new this year are BCANY Service Games. The BCANY Service Games are modeled after the North Carolina Endowment Games and the Ohio Foundation Games. Board member, Coach Bill Merna of Ogdensburg Free Academy is going to test run a BCANY Service Game this year. More details on how to participate will be coming later this month.

During basketball season at Hamilton High School, spectators typically focus on the players. This season, however, all eyes were on varsity basketball coach David Rhyde.

Well, not as much on Rhyde as his neckties.

Thanks to a friendly suggestion by Rhyde family physician David Haswell, whose son is the team captain, spectators donated ties for Rhyde to wear at each game.

But in order for the tie to be wearable, the donor first had to make a contribution to the American Cancer Society.

By Hamilton’s final regular-season game Rhyde had collected a diverse array of neckties in all sizes, colors and patterns. His wardrobe includes bow ties, one sporting Disney cartoon character the Tasmanian Devil, Darth Vader, a variety of 1970s throwbacks, even a bolero.

The endeavor has generated team spirit and raised more than $1200. for the cancer society.

“A lot of this is the community,” said Rhyde, who also works for the village of Hamilton. “I think they got the idea they could get rid of all their ugly ties. But I’m going to put them in a pile, take a picture and send them back to their owners.”

Throughout the season, tie fever spread like wildfire.

Olean HS- Girls Coach and Athletic Director Don Scholla reports that Olean HS held two “Coaches vs. Cancer” events, the boys “Coaches vs. Cancer” game was held on Friday 1/23/09 and the girls game was held on the following Friday 1/30/09. All of the basketball coaches and the visiting team coaches participated by wearing sneakers while coaching to help raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. “Coaches vs. cancer” cards to those who donated and some “coaches vs. cancer” bracelets that we sold as well. For the girls game some “breast cancer awareness” sweatbands were purchased and worn during the game by players from both teams. The Olean girls wore pink sweatbands and the visiting Falconer girls wore white bands. The bands had the “breast cancer awareness” pink ribbon embroidered on them. All in all, with the generous help of the Olean Sports Boosters Club two very successful “coaches vs. cancer” games were held at OHS.
